The “Blumar Circular” project has recycled 7.8 tons of buoy plastic and 38.5 tons corresponding to floats to manufacture transport racks
Salmones Blumar adds a new commitment to the environment by delivering a solution proposal for waste generated in farming centers. This year the supply, operations, environment and sustainability areas have worked together for the sustainable development of the company, through the implementation of a circular economy project named “Blumar Circular”, which was created based on the company’s sustainability strategy guidelines.
“Blumar Circular” consists of the treatment of plastics and solid waste for recycling, with the objective of generating products that have new use and added value within the facilities following the principles of circular economy. On this occasion, the recycling company Greenspot provided support, with whom the mold was developed to manufacture the racks intended to facilitate the transport of water drums and gas cylinders to farming centers, which are made with 35 to 45 kg of pellets from waste from the centers. This project, in addition to being environmentally friendly, reaffirms Blumar’s commitment to being responsible for the use and reintegration of its waste into the company’s productive system.
For the development of this project, work with local suppliers was considered from the beginning with the intention of enhancing their skills and boosting their economy through new businesses. Greenspot’s executive director, Benjamín González, commented that there is increasingly more awareness of doing things right, “I am certain that this type of project is the way forward and I hope it becomes more widespread so that all companies adopt similar behaviors. With the circular economy, we are not just looking for a headline, for this to make sense it must have sustainable foundations and that is what we have been working on”.
In parallel, Blumar has worked on recycling high-density plastics (HDP) with Puelche Plastic Processor to change the aeration system of farming centers. Regarding this, Nicolas Eymin, supply manager of Salmones Blumar, stated that “our strategy in relation to the use of plastics must change, we must assume the shared value that the acquisition of these products means, where circular economy is the tool that will allow us to reduce the environmental and economic costs of these inputs in the long term. The reduction of consumption, optimizing processes, reuse, repair, recycling and the creation of new products for the productive cycle based on our recycled plastics, to achieve the economic success that this type of projects promotes, it is necessary that local circular economy ventures such as Greenspot and Puelche Plastics gain strength in the area, to increase innovation and technology, in order to find better and more circular solutions that allow us to reduce solid waste generation in our value chain as much as possible.”
For her part, Barbara Gundermann, environmental manager of Salmones Blumar, commented that the implementation of the sustainability strategy within the activities that govern the production process “motivated us to work on one of the most important impact indicators of the industry, waste. To achieve proposing an adequate solid industrial waste management system, it was necessary to conduct a diagnosis, where two critical points were identified, traceability and the disposal or final destination of waste”.
She added that to address the solution, the main emphasis was placed on reducing impact, giving productive value to the waste by introducing it sustainably into the process and consequently reducing its generation. “To achieve the above, the concept of reuse and recycling was used, developing a circular economy model for waste management multidisciplinary approach. In this context, plastic recycling takes on strength in the “Blumar Circular” project.
“Blumar Circular” is the way in which the company begins to chart a path towards circular economy, environmental care and innovation in the use of resources. This is the beginning of what Blumar intends to continue working on to make the different processes of the company more sustainable and innovate in the continuous improvement of the company’s actions together with local development.
