An agreement that will allow undergraduate students to carry out their professional internships was signed by the University of Magallanes with Blumar, a company dedicated to fishing and aquaculture.
The rector of UMAG, José Maripani, highlighted the company’s support and interest in welcoming students from careers such as aquaculture technician as well as marine biology students. “We have also been discussing the possibility of contributing to the industry in terms of research, so that there can be a more sustainable productive process, and that this industry can be established in places that also have recovery processes,” noted the academic authority.

Pablo Solís, Blumar’s Production Sub-manager in Magallanes, highlighted this alliance with academia as a joint strengthening and contribution to young people from Magallanes. “Mainly behind us are the students, the development of the region through training, professional internships, research, which is what brings us together today and which we are very pleased to be able to participate with the university”.

The executive stated that they are interested in learning about the performance of students linked to technological development, robotics, mechanics, in the engineering field, but mainly in aquaculture where students can do internships and develop as professionals in cultivation centers and be future relevant actors in the industry.

Bibiana Jara, an academic and director of the Department of Sciences and Natural Resources, said that with this agreement students gain the opportunity to do professional internships with them, to write their theses and eventually achieve a job position with them. “There are several students who have done internships at different salmon farms, and they have been hired for different types of analysis. So we already know that they are working, and with some consulting firms that operate with these salmon farming companies, so that is what they gain: experience and job opportunities”.
