Punta Arenas, October 20, 2023. Thanks to the collaboration agreement between Blumar and Liceo María Behety, 24 students specializing in Aquaculture at the Punta Arenas high school completed a training course that will allow them to work as operators of underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs).

The classes included both theoretical and practical components, totaling 50 hours over two weeks. This marks the third time this course has been conducted in partnership with the high school and, as in previous years, the modules were funded through tax incentives from the National Training and Employment Service (Sence).

Blumar’s Production Sub-manager in Magallanes, Pablo Solís, stated that “we had a high turnout of young students from the high school. During these two weeks, they acquired tools that allow them not only to graduate as basic-level aquaculture technicians, but also to possess a skill set that enables them to grow in other fields related to this area.”

Nelson Sánchez, Operations Assistant at Patagonia ROV, commented that “students were taught the practical and technical aspects of underwater robotics. The youngsters were very enthusiastic, and every day I urged them to make the most of this unique opportunity.”

Camila Huerta, one of the participating Aquaculture students, expressed that “I found it very entertaining. We hadn’t had exposure to this before, and it will be extremely useful for us in the future when we do our internships and want to join a company.”

The practical sessions were held thanks to the support of Patagonia ROV and the Empresa Portuaria Austral (Austral Port Authority), which provided access to the facilities at the Mardones Pier. With this initiative, Blumar has now carried out 8 courses and programs with the high school as a way to contribute to technical and vocational education.
