BluRiver participates in the launch of the Magellanic Salmon Program together with other salmon farming companies in the area and the Association of Salmon and Trout Producers of Magallanes, which has as its main objective to achieve sustainable development of the industry in the region, based on health, regional identity, environment and surroundings.

The guild representative clarified that, since November 2016, both producing companies and suppliers agreed that “in the XII region there was great potential to address in a much more powerful instance such as a program, with a defined objective and long-term perspective that takes charge of the challenges of salmon farming in Magallanes.”

Furthermore, he adds that previous positive and negative experiences from other regions have been gathered “In this region, salmon farming development has been different from others, at a different scale and rhythm. Advances in technology have also helped to production with less impact, with less risk; which is why in 20 years there have never been crises like in other territories, so the great challenge is to protect the heritage we have”.

Working Method

During the program launch, the work carried out was presented to the community based on four fundamental pillars: health, environment, regional identity and surroundings.

Among the progress made to date, an epidemiological study stands out, conducted to identify the risk factors of bacterial kidney disease and the collection of all environmental variables that are measured by producers and scientists to generate a baseline that allows creating indicators specific to the singular characteristics of the region.

On the other hand, and to address regional identity, the program counts on research conducted by students from a prestigious University of the United States who analyzed the differentiating characteristics of Magellanic salmon.

Suppliers and Producers

Both suppliers and producers demonstrated their interest in continuing to support and participate in this program and promote the cultivation of Magellanic salmon in a sustainable way to reach international markets with a product recognized for its characteristics specific to the region and sanitarily acceptable.
