Global Compact recognizes Blumar for circular economy projects and sustainable development

Sustainability

– The company was awarded in the categories “SDG Interconnection”, for its project “Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture”, and “Planet”, for the initiative “Blumar Circular”.

Talcahuano, December 14, 2021. Blumar, a fishing and salmon farming company, was awarded today by the Global Compact Network, through its “Conecta 2021” program. This distinction recognizes those companies that presented success cases aimed at generating impact in the areas of action of the Global Compact and, in addition, contributed to the advancement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promote the fulfillment of the 2030 Agenda.

In this version, the "Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture" initiative was awarded in the “SDG Interconnection” category. This project -which was the second best case among the 71 presented- aims to develop a pilot for algae cultivation in Blumar’s cultivation centers alongside artisanal fishermen, since these are major greenhouse gas capturers and would have the ability to assimilate nutrients from aquaculture, while also allowing income generation for fishermen. That is, it is an initiative that has environmental, social and productive impact

Likewise, the “Blumar Circular” case, which obtained third place within the “Planet” category, consists of the treatment of plastics and solid waste for recycling, in order to generate products that have new use and added value within the facilities, following the fundamentals of the circular economy. Thus, to date they have reused 3.5 tons of plastic and have been returned to the company’s productive cycle.

The executive director of Global Compact Network Chile, Margarita Ducci, highlighted that "making visible the outstanding initiatives that contribute to the 2030 Agenda seems relevant to us. We congratulate those who presented their initiatives, those who were selected and those who will receive today the recognition in each of the seven categories we designed".

"These recognitions are the fruits of the great work carried out by our Blumar collaborators. Both initiatives have been concrete actions to address an issue that is very relevant to us as a company: sustainability. In that sense, we believe that through innovation we can continue advancing in having an activity that is more responsible with the environment and addresses social, environmental and climate challenges",  concluded Blumar’s general manager, Gerardo Balbontín.

Both initiatives were developed through strategic alliances where different areas of the organization participated directly with companies such as Greenspot, the University of Aysén and the salmon industry association Salmón Chile.

At the consolidated level, the company reported increases in revenue, pre-fair value adjustment EBITDA, and net income during the second quarter and first half of 2026, driven primarily by the fishing segment and the recognition of U.S. tariff refunds in the salmon segment. On a year-to-date basis, the aquaculture segment remained below the results recorded in the first half of 2025, although it showed a recovery during the second quarter.
