• The work has been developed together with EcoLógica and is focused on promoting circular economy within Blumar company operations. This has allowed 320 garbage trucks to stop being sent to landfills.

            Talcahuano, September 13, 2022. Blumar has evaluated as a success the agreement signed with EcoLógica, a leading waste management company in the country. The agreement, which began in May of last year, has allowed the fishing and salmon farming company to manage 822 thousand kilos of waste and recover 76% of it, equivalent to more than 621 thousand kilos.

            How much does this contribution mean for the environment? The figures are encouraging. For example, this amount of managed waste is equivalent to the annual consumption of 734 homes or 6,782 ten-minute showers. Or even better, avoiding the emission of greenhouse gases equivalent to removing 110 cars from circulation.

            This agreement was born from Blumar in Puerto Montt, reusing waste from Aysén cultivation centers, as part of the work it has done in recent years regarding the company’s sustainability in the activities it carries out. “This agreement has been the consolidation of work to promote circular economy and reduce the company’s impact, through the initiatives we have launched in the Blumar Circular project,” said the sustainability sub-manager, Felipe Hormazábal.

The Blumar Circular project is contained in the company’s sustainability strategy and seeks to promote the circulation of materials and reduce impacts generated through waste management aligned with circular economy. “We did this with a holistic perspective, since we generated minimization actions, but also valorization through a corporate continuous improvement system. The only possible way to do this is through comprehensive company involvement,” emphasizes Felipe Hormazábal.

Technology for circular management

            The alliance with EcoLógica is focused on the adoption of technologies for waste management, implementing traceability software, segregation equipment, personnel, transport, legal traceability and training, which has allowed Blumar to focus on reducing the impact of the activity, managing and measuring its carbon footprint. 

            “For years we made the decision that our business strategy and sustainability be one and the same, promoting management with a deep environmental and community focus. This is the path we want to follow to live sustainability in practice,” said Blumar’s Supply Sub-manager, Nelson Pérez.

            For his part, EcoLógica’s Commercial Manager, Diego Schneuer, mentioned that “advancing in the recovery of waste generated by Blumar has been a joint and comprehensive work process. On one hand, we have articulated our operational and logistics capacity and, on the other, we have driven a cultural transformation, so that waste ceases to be considered as such and can be seen and treated as residue that can have value and return to the production cycle. It is with this synergy that we achieve companies like this advancing on the Zero Waste Route through waste management, which is the first strategic step to move toward a circular economy.”

            The following challenges that come through this agreement are mainly related to increasing the base of waste they manage, implementing a clean point in offices and seeking a management model that allows them to improve segregation from the source in cultivation centers, eliminating household waste disposed in landfills for this purpose.
