The suspension of in-person classes for students at San Vicente Basic School in Talcahuano, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, complicated their learning process, as only 10% of their enrollment had access to a computer with internet.
Faced with this situation, its director María Patricia Enríquez approached her Blumar neighbors to request help. “They have always supported us, they had already done so with disinfectant for the school at the beginning of this health crisis,” she recalls.
San Vicente School is a welcoming institution, with students of high vulnerability, which is why the Daem of Talcahuano was asked about the possibility of having tablets so students could connect with their teachers and continue classes, but internet connection was lacking in the homes, so Blumar was asked to pay for that service.
“During the first semester we could only deliver guides physically when guardians came to school twice a month looking for a food box, then teachers tried to call all the students to support them, sharing some capsules, but the truth is that the whole process was complicated and it became urgent to connect with the children,” says the director.
Blumar’s Fishing Operations Manager, José Ocares, mentioned that the company has had a relationship of more than four years with San Vicente Basic School, as the institution is part of the “Blumar at your School” program, an instance where work is done supporting educational establishments in obtaining environmental certification from the Ministry of Environment.
During this year and given the pandemic situation, Blumar agreed to the request with a donation of 75 chips for students that would allow them to have internet to study. “When we received the request, we did not hesitate to accept it because it seemed important to us that students were connected and not interrupt their learning process, because we want them to study peacefully until the end of the year. The purchase was managed and delivered to the school at the end of September, and we did it because one of our pillars is that our community grows and that is not possible without education, and if we can help in that, it comforts us.”
Despite how difficult 2020 has been, the director highlighted that they have continued making the effort to educate against all odds.
