– Students of the Aquaculture Technician program visited the salmon farming company’s facilities in Magallanes for the first time to learn firsthand about the work carried out in the place.
Punta Arenas, November 28, 2023. For the first time, Aquaculture Technician students from the University of Magallanes (UMAG) visited facilities of Salmones Blumar Magallanes.
The initiative was driven by the fishing and salmon farming company to bring second-year students to the field and to the practices developed in tasks related to their career. Thus, nine students and two teachers from the specialty arrived at the Estero Riquelme Culture Center.
Constanza Lemus is in her second year of the program. She stated that the visit “was a great opportunity for us to see what we are specializing in. I thought it was very beautiful, it’s very good to have the opportunity to see this work, which is very wonderful”.
Orlando Mancilla, a teacher from the University of Magallanes, commented that “these activities should be done more frequently. These instances bring new experiences, also new encounters, and teaching keeps renewing itself”. He added that “we are very grateful to my colleagues for having this opportunity”.
Gloria Sánchez, a teacher in the program, noted that “the students experienced firsthand all the experience that happens in production and, furthermore, the standard being handled is quite high, so it is an incentive for the students, thinking about their internships and their future careers”.
For his part, Nicolás Martinich, production assistant for Magallanes, said that “we have wanted to do this visit for a long time, mainly because we already have consolidated the strategic agreement with María Behety High School, so it was time to expand” the experience.
Meanwhile, Renzo Muñoz, assistant at the Estero Riquelme Center of Salmones Blumar Magallanes, valued the instance, since “we were able to explain to the new generations how things are being done now in the culture centers and the characteristics that are being developed day by day to continuously improve this industry”.
