– In an event that brought together leaders from the aquaculture sector, Corfo and the Sustainability and Climate Change Agency, the work that the company has carried out within the framework of the Clean Production Agreement that promoted salmon farming was recognized.
Since 2021, Blumar has embarked on a process to adopt more sustainable operational practices, within the framework of the Clean Production Agreement (CPA), promoted by the Sustainability and Climate Change Agency, in collaboration with Salmon Chile.
This alliance has allowed the company to make significant progress in key areas such as the circular economy and the standardization of carbon footprint measurement. These advances were recognized within the framework of the seminar “Sustainability and Adaptation to Climate Change: Challenges for the Chilean Salmon Industry to 2050”, carried out by Salmon Chile and the Sustainability and Climate Change Agency.
“This recognition is the result of the hard work of our entire team, which has been fundamental in the implementation of a standard to measure and manage the carbon footprint, as well as the effective reduction of waste through efficient management. This achievement reaffirms our continued commitment to sustainability,” said Juan Pablo Oviedo, Deputy Manager of Regulatory Affairs at Blumar.
In the instance, the executive director of Corfo’s Sustainability and Climate Change Agency, Ximena Ruz, noted during her speech that “the objective of this agreement was to advance in sustainability together and contribute to the mitigation and adaptation challenges that climate change has, but involving the value chain and strengthening the link with the territories in a more concrete and measurable way.”
The company has declared that it seeks to be a benchmark in circular production, focusing on waste management, setting the goal that by 2027, 80% of waste will be recovered within a circular economy model. In 2023, this goal was achieved, so the company carried out arduous work of analysis and reevaluation of the goals together with Kyklos, a waste expert company, defining as a new commitment the recovery of at least 90% of its waste generated by 2030.
Meanwhile, regarding the carbon footprint, Blumar carried out standardization work to measure it, and based on that diagnosis it defined that it seeks to achieve a 30% reduction of the corporate carbon footprint of scope 1 and 2 by 2030 in terms of intensity, with respect to 2020 levels. In addition, the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) was incorporated, which will allow it to increase collaboration to achieve that goal.
