Blumar obtained Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification for three of its farming centers in the Magallanes region: Marta, Punta Vergara, and Mina Elena.
“This is an important milestone for Blumar, as it allows our company to offer a permanent supply of ASC-certified Atlantic salmon from now on,” said Sebastián Goycoolea, CEO of BluGlacier, a Blumar subsidiary, and Ventisqueros, the company that handles commercial management in the USA.
Blumar plans to certify 100% of its production in the Magallanes region in the second half of this year, once two other farming centers complete their certification process.
In addition to those mentioned above, five other centers are certified or under evaluation in the Los Lagos and Aysén Regions. BluGlacier’s goal is to market most of Blumar’s salmon production from ASC-certified centers, including those of Ventisqueros. The two companies produce approximately 100,000 metric tons of salmon per year.
ASC certification requires compliance with or demonstration of progress on more than 150 different indicators. ASC recognized Blumar’s capacity to address key issues such as reducing antibiotic use through better management based on area diversification and exploring non-pharmacological alternatives to reduce and address disease outbreaks.
Blumar has also committed to using sustainably produced feed and collaborating with scientists to investigate the risks of establishing non-native species in its production zones, considering special measures to protect areas of high conservation value.
