• The company was a finalist, among more than 150 applications, for its agreement with the María Behety High School in Punta Arenas and the Multitrophic Aquaculture project in the Sustainable Initiatives awards, organized by the Sustainability Hub of Pulso. 

            Santiago, January 17, 2023. The salmon and fishing company Blumar was recognized as one of the three finalists in the tenth edition of the Sustainable Initiatives Awards, held at the Tánica Building and organized by the Sustainability Hub of Pulso. The company was nominated in the “Quality Education” category, for its agreement with the María Behety High School in Punta Arenas and in “Responsible Production and Consumption” for its Multitrophic Aquaculture project in Aysén.

The alliance with the educational institution seeks to promote and encourage aquaculture in the school through various activities. This project has allowed the training of more than 150 young people in aquaculture-related topics, contributing to Magallanes having local talent for the development of future salmon farming.

For its part, the multitrophic aquaculture project consists of an innovative initiative that ensures that part of the nutrients and organic waste that salmon farming activity contributes to the ecosystem are assimilated by algae, while also helping to reduce the effects of greenhouse gases, fixing carbon and producing oxygen.

            In total there were more than 150 applications from sustainable companies and projects throughout the country, which were evaluated by the executive director of the Global Pact Network Chile, Margarita Ducci, the director of the Research Center on Sustainability Cisger at UDD, Alex Godoy and the director of the Sustainability Observatory FEN at the University of Chile, Reinalina Chávarro, who finally selected the 21 projects aspiring to the awards.

            “Being finalists in two categories of these awards fills us with pride, because it is a path that as a company we began to walk years ago, putting sustainability at the center of our business strategy and understanding it as a corporate process of continuous improvement, which impacts all business units. We want to continue to have a positive impact on communities and the environment through these initiatives, enhancing them for their growth”, said Blumar’s Sustainability Sub-Manager, Felipe Hormazábal.

            It is worth noting that at the ceremony also participated the Minister of Economy, Nicolás Grau, and a forum-panel was held on “How innovation helps sustainable development”, in which the economist Jeannette von Wolfersdorff, the co-founder of the EmprendeTuMente.org Foundation, Daniel Daccarett and the director of Kodea, Fernanda Vicente participated.
