Blumar Awarded with Reduction and Quantification Seals from the Huella – Chile Program of the Ministry of Environment

Sustainability

Blumar S.A.’s total reduction achievement is associated with the fuel change used at the San Vicente Flour Plant, transitioning from FO6 to Natural Gas and the change to more automatic combustion control systems that allow greater efficiency in combustion, which results in lower fuel consumption for the processes.

Blumar in its sustainability strategy defines its commitment to sustainability through 4 pillars, managing concrete actions that are already showing results like this one linked to the environmental commitment pillar that this week has made it worthy of recognition from the Huella – Chile Program delivered by the Ministry of Environment and Asipes at a ceremony held in Talcahuano.

“At Blumar, we are proud to belong to the Huella – Chile Program, which is an initiative of the Ministry of Environment to which we voluntarily adhered to quantify, report and manage our Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. And we did so convinced of the contribution we make to our environment”, highlighted the manager of the Fishing area, José Ocares, who also added that “we have received recognition through a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) quantification seal for all Blumar S.A. plants, the Blumar Salmon processing plant in Talcahuano and the Bahía Caldera Fishing plant, which demonstrates our concern and permanent commitment to contributing to the mitigation of climate change effects”.

For Blumar it has been very important to manage its emissions in order to become agents of change, taking measures and working collaboratively so that our country fulfills world commitments such as the Paris Agreement.

Blumar S.A. conducted the measurement of its Carbon footprint in 2018 and 2019 through the Huella – Chile program, which allowed quantifying and visualizing the levels of CO2 emissions emitted by its productive activity and did so in a commitment with the industry alongside Asipes. “It was a starting point and although at this stage we did not define specific reduction plans, we did look at the areas of greatest impact and sought improvement alternatives that would allow us to lower our emission level and that due to the nature of our activity, being associated with pelagic fishing, total emission levels are very much associated with resource availability”, said José Ocares.

Comparing the 2018 – 2019 operation, we achieved a total reduction level for Blumar S.A. plants of 15%, this is equivalent to 8,350 tons of CO2eq/year, where the reduction level at the San Vicente Flour plant in Talcahuano stands out, which obtained a 28% reduction with 3,600 tons of CO2 equivalent.

As an industry, Asipes reported a reduction of 12.5% at a ceremony that had the participation of the Biobío intendant, Patricio Kuhn, who valued the business commitment to advance on these issues even in a year as complicated as 2020 has been due to the pandemic.

For the Regional Secretary of Environment of the Biobío Region, Mario Delannays, the work of the industry has been very timely, as it promotes the sustainability of the productive sector, especially one very important for the region due to the impact it has on the economy and job creation. This commitment allows us to envision an auspicious future toward 2050 with a goal for the region to achieve “0” Carbon Neutral by 2050.

For Macarena Cepeda the work of Asipes member companies demonstrates that serious work is being done, with efforts that go beyond compliance and that “we will remain committed to honoring international agreements as a country”.

Finally it is noted that Blumar S.A.’s total reduction achievement is associated with two factors, the first was the fuel change at the San Vicente Flour plant, transitioning from FO6 to Natural Gas, a fuel mainly with lower levels of particulate matter and a lower level of CO2, the second factor was the change to more automatic combustion control systems that allow greater efficiency in combustion, which results in lower fuel consumption for the processes.
