• A total of 64 racks have already begun operating, symbolizing 3.5 tons of plastic reused and returned to the company’s productive cycle.

With the aim of giving new useful life and providing a solution to waste such as plastic from buoys and floaters generated at the company’s farming centers, Salmones Blumar together with Greenspot, began a year ago working on the first molds for the production of racks whose function is to facilitate the transport of water barrels to the farming centers.

“Blumar Circular” consists of the treatment of plastics and solid waste for recycling, with the objective of generating products that have new use and added value within the facilities, following the principles of the circular economy. The project emerged from the guidelines of the company’s sustainability strategy, based on the commitment to environmental care, innovation and the company’s intention to undertake a path toward the circular economy.

Nelson Pérez, Supply Sub-Manager, commented on this: “We focused our efforts on the problem of transporting water barrels to the farming centers. In light of this, one of the positive elements was coordinated work with different areas of the Company: supply, environment, logistics, sustainability and our farming centers. We are open-minded regarding future circular economy projects. This is why we are constantly studying this and participating in initiatives with the aim of improving sustainability in our productive chain. We are focused on business sustainability, not only are we concerned with the beginning of the use of a good, which occurs with its purchase, but also its final disposal.  That is why we seek to carry out internal circular economy projects that are also a permanent solution to the various productive problems that are generated”.

Nicolas Eymin, Head of Supply at Salmones Blumar, referred to this and noted that the current economic model of “extract, produce, waste” is already reaching the limit of its physical capacity. “For Blumar, the circular economy is an attractive alternative that seeks to redefine what growth is, with emphasis on benefits for all of society. This implies dissociating economic activity from the consumption of finite resources and eliminating waste from the system from the design phase. Our circular model creates economic, natural and social capital, based on three principles: eliminate waste and pollution from the design phase, keep products and materials in use, and regenerate natural systems”, the professional emphasized, while noting that the Blumar Circular policy is being created for the company, with the aim of establishing the foundations for behavior toward the circular economy”.

The project directly benefits the environment, the farming centers and the organization’s logistics, as it contributes to the organization of water barrels, reducing waste generation. It was indicated that with its implementation an annual savings of more than 6 million pesos will be achieved, generated by land transport, coastal shipping and bin rental, allowing recovery of its investment in 13 months.

“Blumar Circular” is a project carried out entirely by local suppliers. Benjamín González, Founder of Greenspot commented that the pandemic allowed them to break paradigms. “It was not a project that we concluded quickly, which allowed us to improve the product. This project has been of tremendous importance, we appreciate the confidence that Blumar placed in us, which allowed us to together be pioneers in developing a regional product, being able to achieve a useful, sustainable and local project, trusting in a local company demonstrates that the circular economy is not only possible, but is a reality. We are grateful and proud, without a doubt this marks the beginning of many projects to come”.

Regardless of events related to delays and uncertainty resulting from the eventual pandemic, many of the actions have been delayed, causing the project to take longer than expected. However, “Blumar Circular” is already established within Salmones Blumar’s productive process, with which we seek  to continue working with the intention of improving good practices in the industry, with the aim of establishing the foundations of behavior for the circular economy.
